A Mother’s Pride and Joy

If there is one thing that unites women of all walks of life, it’s motherhood and the love for our children.

I am one proud mother today, as Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who has been held hostage for 5 years and 4 months, is released back into the arms of his mother and his loving family.

Gilad has become a symbol of the pursuit of justice in Israel and in other parts of the world, an almost sacred collective symbol of activism and purpose.

My hope is that he will heal in both body and spirit as soon as possible and return to an “ordinary” life of freedom, friends and family.

All of Israel is rejoicing today, albeit there are different voices opposing the justification of exchanging Gilad for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Some say that it is foolish to release so many who want to harm us and I understand that feeling.

PLEASE, can I ask you to hold your opinions for just a moment and to consider another alternative? Before I do so, let me please stress that I am not naïve and in total respect for the families of victims of terror, I would like to offer a suggestion for change. I have lived in the Middle East long enough to be familiar with the often harsh reality of life here.

SO HERE IS MY PLEA:
Can we please try to exercise some acknowledgement of the over 1,000 who are returning to their families and pray (or intend or whatever you may call it) that this be an opportunity to TRANSCEND the fear based beliefs we have all been carrying and offer a prayer of non-aggression and non-violence as they are embraced by THEIR loved ones?

CAN WE AS MOTHERS REJOICE WITH THEIR MOTHERS?

Can we please use this as an opportunity to give the situation the BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT and the possibility of creating a new, healthy dynamic of trust?

I’m not suggesting we be stupid, just be open to a new possibility and exercise the courage to consider another ALTERNATIVE.

It all begins with ONE NEW THOUGHT, that’s all.

I’m not suggesting we go out into the streets to demonstrate. Just to demonstrate a slight change of consciousness and entertain a new possibility within our heart of hearts.

So I invite you to just give it a try and try it on for size. If the fear arises, instead of acting on it, let’s acknowledge all the violence and the hardship of the past while still holding the possibility of change and open our hearts just ever so slightly.

It can make a world of difference.

OR IT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENT WORLD.

To this end, I am inviting you to join myself and Dr. Owen James this Friday, in a one day workshop on THE POWER OF LOVE AND FORGIVENESS, in which we will use the powerful consciousnesses of LOVE and of FORGIVENESS to transform old patterns and create new, healthy ones. It will take place in Mevasseret, near Jerusalem.

Rhonda Joy
